ASCI is an independent, autonomous, self-supporting public-purpose institution. It is a recognized scientific and industrial research organization (SIRO) by the Ministry of Science and Technology, GoI. ASCI has been providing technical assistance and advisory services in the applied research and consulting space to national and international clients and sponsors. These assignments have been of varied scale, scope and specialization spanning across general and functional management areas, theme-specific domains as well as sectoral disciplines. The number of projects on hand at any point of time exceeds 100. The objective of ASCI has been to catalyze and facilitate solutions on issues of topical interest and current concern to the corporate sector (business and industry) as well as the government. The assistance and advisory services of ASCI foster improved managerial practices in the client/sponsor organizations leading to better financial performance, good governance and long-term effectiveness. ASCI is thus focused as much on outcomes as on outputs.
The project clientele of ASCI is a virtual “who’s who” list, comprising such prestigious agencies and sponsors as the State and Central Governments, their various ministries/departments, constituent establishments, public enterprises, statutory organizations as well as autonomous bodies. ASCI is trusted with work by the International agencies too, like the constituent organizations of the United Nations, the World Bank Institute, Department for International Development (DfID, UK), the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), etc.
ASCI is an institution of national importance established in 1956. The research activity commenced in 1973 with support from the Ford Foundation. Over the years, ASCI has carved a niche for itself on the strength of its domain expertise, well-researched inputs and well-rounded advice.The project teams at ASCI are configured around the nature of problem the client encounters. Well-qualified and experienced faculty with exposure and sensitivity to the environment under study form the nucleus. These domain experts are backed up and supported by inter-disciplinary resources. The idea is to bring holistic perspective to the task at hand, with a longitudinal outlook and an integrated approach. Where needed, ASCI brings on board the project, external resource persons who have proven credentials in the relevant discipline and field of specialization.
It is ASCI’s constant endeavor to integrate economic, social, cultural, financial, technological, regulatory, human, organizational, and environmental aspects as appropriate and applicable in the research design and analytical framework to work out a set of bias-free, apolitical, evidence-based and objective recommendations for tackling the issues delineated in the terms of reference of the assignments.
